Bettys Bay

Information and “map” for hikes within the Harold Porter Botanical Garden can be found at the entrance.

The Harold Porter National Botanical Gardens allows for some of the most spectacular walks in the Biosphere. The circular route in the vicinity of the ampi theater provides easy access for wheelchairs and strollers. The various large indigenous trees in the garden's well-planned landscaping act as windbreaks during the South-East wind and allows for great picnics.

There are various zig-zag and contoured paths around the mountain slopes. Enjoy a tranquil, easy walk up to Disa Kloof waterfall, named for the wild orchids that grow and flower there from mid- December to January.

Rod's Trail (easy 1 hour one way)

Starts at the top of Kloof Road, just west of the Botanical Garden and above the Disa Kloof Youth camp. This hike follows the slopes of the Voorberg (front mountain) through a variety of Erica, Leucadendron and other Fynbos Plants with amazing Spring time flower displays. The view over Betty's Bay is vast and include the lakes and ocean. The route ends in Pipe Road below the Voorberg waterfall. You will need to leave a car at the end of the trail unless you wish to retrace your steps.

Leopard's Kloof  (medium/hard approximately 2 hours)

Permit is required and only issued before 2 pm. A minimal deposit is payable at the entrance for the key required for entry. No persons may enter Leopard's Kloof after 15:00 and the path is closed during very wet weather.

The path is rough and crude ladders often provide the only way forward, as the focus has been to disturb the natural vegetation as little as possible. The climb up is worth the effort with indigenous forests providing shelter from the sun and the sound of cascading waterfalls provide constant music coupled with birdsong along the way. The path leads to a deep black pool at the base of the Leopard's Kloof waterfall. Although tempting, swimming is not allowed.
